Old Money Style for Women: Four Cues, Three Outfits

Use color, shape, layering, and details to try an old-money-inspired look with clothes you already own.

Old-money style is a fashion aesthetic built around an imagined wealthy lifestyle. Vogue's description of the aesthetic mentions plain separates, collars, loafers, and blazers. An outfit can borrow those visual ideas; it cannot tell you anything reliable about someone's wealth or character.

You can try the look with pieces already in your wardrobe. Start with the proportions and colors you enjoy, then use the cues below as options, not rules.

Four visual cues

Style cue Try with what you own Make it yours
Color Pair a navy top with cream trousers for a restrained contrast. Swap cream for a color you wear often, such as olive.
Shape Wear a straight-leg bottom with a top that sits close to the shoulder. Choose a looser top if you prefer, and tuck just the front to show the waistband.
Layering Leave a button-front shirt open over a plain tee. Roll the sleeves or leave them down, whichever suits the outfit.
Details Repeat the brown of your shoes in a belt or bag you already own. Skip the match and add a scarf in a color you like instead.

The palette need not be beige. Dark denim can sit beside a pale blue shirt, and a patterned garment can be the focal point if you keep the other pieces simple. Color and pattern have a place here; clothing and income are not measures of anyone's worth.

Three outfit formulas

1. The easy trouser outfit

Try a white T-shirt with straight navy trousers and flat brown loafers or other flat shoes you own. An open cardigan is an optional layer. If the proportions feel too loose, tuck in the front of the T-shirt; leave it untucked if you prefer.

2. The denim outfit

Pair a light blue button-front shirt with dark straight-leg jeans and plain sneakers you already own. An optional belt can pick up a color from the shoes. Roll the shirt sleeves or leave them down to make the outfit feel like yours.

3. The dress outfit

Choose a solid green dress in a shape you like and wear it with flat black shoes you own. A black bag is optional. If you prefer more coverage at the arms, add an open button-front shirt in a color that works with the dress.

Try one combination

Pick the formula closest to what you already wear. Lay out its main pieces and shoes, then try them together; change one color or proportion if the combination feels unlike you. There is no need to buy a piece to complete the exercise.
